Sail Through History at the Richardson Maritime Museum

Located in the heart of Cambridge’s Main Street district  is the Richardson Maritime Museum, one of Dorchester County’s historic treasures. Walk into the museum and step back into the rich history of Dorchester County and its influence on the Chesapeake Bay’s traditional wooden sailing vessels.

The museum makes history come alive with beautiful models of ships built and used in the region made by expert local modelers and the boatbuilders themselves. The precise details of the models will leave you awestruck. The museum also features exhibits on the tools of the boatbuilders’ trade and waterman artifacts that show you how the boats were built and used throughout the county’s history. In fact, many of the boats created here went on to affect the course of history in the War of 1812.

The Richardson Maritime Museum is also preserving the art of boatbuilding in Dorchester County by creating the Richardson Maritime Heritage Center where boats will be built and restored in a building once used as a basket factory.  While the facility is not complete, visitors are encouraged to come see the work being done and might even have the opportunity to lend a hand.
