Oakland

Known as the “great small town”, Oakland is nestled among the mountains in southern Garrett County in an area comprised of hills and valleys, abundant forests and rivers, wildlife, lakes, waterfalls and magnificent sunsets over the mountaintops.

Conveniently located near Deep Creek Lake, Oakland has a thriving and beautiful downtown which has blossomed into a center of activity. Visitors head to downtown for its pedestrian friendly shopping, restaurants, and historical sites such as the 19th century Oakland Railroad Station and Historical Society Museum.

Home to the Garrett County Arts Council, visitors to Oakland can also stop by The Gallery Shop to shop for hand-crafted items such as paintings, photographs, pottery, knit goods, blown glass, and more.

The area also includes the largest waterfall in the State of Maryland, Swallow Falls.
